How Hacks Like 23andMe Could Have Been Avoided
As most of you are aware while reading this, 23andMe was hacked back in October and released the full details last week. You can read more about it in the link at the bottom of this blog post. As this happens with multiple businesses everyday, nearly one cyber attack every thirty-nine seconds to be specific. (source: https://www.cobalt.io/blog/cybersecurity-statistics-2024 ) the majority, if not all of them, could all be avoided. Most of the breaches that happen are due to weak or non existent security policies. 23andMe data breach was because they did not enforce stronger password policies for customers. They even went and updated the terms of service to avoid being sued by the 7 million users that were affected.
This “newest” example goes to show that security policies, as much as they are a pain to implement, need to be made AND enforced. It may be easier to use the same passwords across multiple platforms but it has the BIGGEST security risk that is exploited over and over again. Matter of fact, it is the second most common way security breaches happen right after malware and phishing attacks (source: https://www.f5.com/glossary/security-breaches )
